The northeast monsoon rain in Chennai has been in the news for quite a few days now. Rain has always been used as an important factor in Tamil cinema. Let us take a look at a few films in which rain was used as an important element to take the movie forward.

Mazhai:

No surprise here, just as the title suggests the entire plot of the movie is based on rain. Jayam Ravi, an unemployed youngster and Deva, a powerful don fall in love with Shriya at a railway station on a rainy day. Arjun keeps bumping into Shriya everytime it rains. This makes them both feel that it is the rain that keeps bringing them together, and they start to fall in love. What happens next forms the rest of the story.

VIP 2:

Sequel to 2014 film Velai Illa Pattathari starring Dhanush in the lead role, the movie has Kajol as the antagonist. In the climax scene when Dhanush confronts her office, they are not able to leave the building due to the heavy downpour. Then the duo get to know about each other and finally become friends.

Comaali:

The movie starring Jayam Ravi is about what happens when someone awakens after being in a coma for 16 years. Ravi tries to get back a statue belonging to him from MLA K S Ravikumar’s house. The plan is executed on a rainy day and Ravi also gets caught by Ravikumar’s wife who is pregnant. But before she could communicate the matter to Dharmaraj, she slips and goes into labour and Ravi, out of humanitarian consideration, helps her to get to the hospital. En route, Ravi’s auto gets stuck in flood due to heavy downpour, so he carries Ravikumar’s wife to the hospital with people on the street helping them. After learning that Ravi helped his wife and that their child was born safely, Ravikumar thanks Ravi, seemingly okay with him retaining the statue.

Anbe Sivam:

Directed by Sundar C, starring Kamal Haasan and Madhavan in the lead roles, this is considered one of the cult classics. The movie begins with two men waiting for a flight to Chennai at the Biju Patnaik Airport in Bhubaneswar. But their flight was cancelled due to heavy rain. With the rain flooding the city, the two men are forced to carry on with their journey in an unexpected manner. What happens next forms the core plot of the story.

  • Baasha:
When it comes to rain being used as an element in cinema. We cannot miss out on the epic scene where Anandraj beats Rajini in Baasha. The smile that Rajini wears even while getting beaten up, with the thunder and rain background is sure to be etched in the memory of each and every Rapini fan. The rain effect used in the situation was very apt to convey the emotions of Rajini fans during the scene.                                                             By Naveen
