PM Narendra Modi signals ‘mission mode’, government to hire 10 lakh by end-2023

The government announced on Tuesday the intention to hire 10 lakh individuals in various central government departments and ministries during the coming 18 months based on a “mission mode”, a deadline that will expire a mere 4-5 months before when next year’s Narendra Modi government is set to seek the support of voters to return to the powerhouse.

“PM Narendra Modi reviewed the status of Human Resources in all departments and ministries and instructed that recruitment of 10 lakh people be done by the Government in a mission mode in the next 1.5 years,” the Prime Minister’s Office tweeted.

TOI reported on the third of April first reported on the Prime Minister’s desire to fill the vacancies fast and begin the process within a few months. After that, each agency and department made an inventory of vacant positions for the posts that were sanctioned.

In a long, four-hour meeting with all Central Government Secretaries on April 1, the Prime Minister had discussed the recruitment campaign. Modi’s call to speed up the process of filling vacant positions gains significance in light of the opposition’s attempts to convert “vacancies” and unemployment in general, in the recently concluded elections for the assembly, particularly within Uttar Pradesh.

Even though BJP was unable to win comfortably the PM’s order, in conjunction with an identical order given from UP the chief minister Yogi Adityanath, could help take care of what could be an issue in their plan for the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

Sources said a good chunk of the vacancies is in railways.

In response to a question asked in Rajya Sabha in July last year the Secretary of State, Personnel Jitendra Singh had said that there were 8.72 lakh vacant positions in various central government departments as of March 1st, 2020. The authorized total of departments of the central government was 40.05 lakh, of which 31.32 employees were working at the time.
