Outlander has always been a political show, among many other things, even if fans don’t think so. While later seasons of the Starz series have (mostly uncritically) landed in scenarios where the show’s white protagonists aren’t the easily recognizable heroes, Season 6 is poised to Outlander, Claire and Jaime returned more firmly to the “right” side of history with the outbreak of the Revolutionary War in Colonial America (or, you know, hopefully… come into your own, Jamie!)
Starz just released the Outlander Season 6 teaser trailer as part of the NYCC celebrations. As the minute-long sneak peek begins with photos of our favorite couples (as well as Roger and Brianna) staring at each other lovingly, the tension quickly builds. We see a man hammering a ‘Refuse British Goods’ message on a nationwide bulletin board. “It begins,” says time traveler Claire. “A storm. The war. It’s almost here.” (Looking at these kinds of monologues, you can kind of understand why the locals keep accusing Claire of being a witch.) Claire, of course, is talking about the Revolutionary War. Check it all out below…
The Revolutionary War as a central external conflict makes the series come full circle in some respects; finally, Outlander started life as a show mainly centered around the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, Scotland’s struggle for independence from British colonization that didn’t end well for the Highlanders. While Outlander never fully delved into its inherently political themes, notably the show’s first season only aired on UK TV after the first Scottish independence referendum in 2014, leading many to theorize (seemingly correct?) that the UK government was involved in the delay. Outlander Season 6 will see the British colonizers again as active antagonists.
Outlander Season 6 will be largely based on A breath of snow and ashes, the sixth tome in the Outlander series. The book spans from early 1773 to late 1776. The Revolutionary War officially began in 1775, but there were clearly tensions that preceded it, meaning much of the drama in Season 6 will have to do with the political turmoil. Last year, Outlander season 6 executive producer Ronald D. Moore told Collider, “We’re in the new world, we’re in the American colonies, and the American Revolution is getting closer, so that’s a big thing moving forward and in the middle of the further.” we come in season 6.”
